Northern Thai temples often featured intricately carved wooden ceilings made up of coffered panels. The panels themselves were square with a circular design in the center. The overall effect is of a series of ornate wheels or cogs within a square field. The design, called "Thamachak," symbolizes the Buddhist belief in the great wheel of life and reincarnation. It also may symbolize the lotus flower (opened, viewed from above), which is the Buddhist symbol of purity. A woman in Chiang Mai, Thailand carved this Panel from Teak wood.

This massive carving is made from 8 individual segments that hang together on a wall cleat. It’s hand-made from reclaimed Teak, stained with printer’s ink and bleached in the tropical sun outside our workshop in Chiang Mai. It makes a spectacular wall piece or a unique headboard.
